The Battle of Gettysburg was fought on three days (1st-3rd) in July, 1863. This was General Robert E. Lee's second attempt to invade the North (The first attempt was halted at Antietam in September, 1862). The Gettysburg campaign followed Lee's most famous victory at Chancellorsville, VA (May, 1863 ) over Major General Joseph Hooker.
Gettysburg is a small town in south central Pennsylvania, located less than ten miles from the Maryland border.
The battle developed as a meeting engagement between the Union Army and the Confederate Army. Neither commander had planned to fight there. The battle basically can be divided up not only by days but also geographically. The first day's fighting took place mostly north and west of the town. The second day's fighting took place mainly on the far southern part of the Union Army's positions. The third day's fighting took place in the middle of the Union position.
