Barlow's Knoll was known as Blocher's Knoll prior to the battle. It's current name comes from the BG Francis C. Barlow who tried unsuccessfully to defend this position from an attack by MG Jubal Early's Confederates on the first day of the battle. Barlow was wounded and captured, but later recovered by Union forces when Lee's army retreated.
